The breadth of environmental technologies developed by NAMI covers a broad range of application areas. Air and water purification technologies are essential to the highly dense population and also to the Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta industries such as textile, metal processing, printing, and chemical processing. Functional coatings are being developed for various applications. Anti-bacterial and self-cleaning coatings are in high demand in hospital and healthcare facilities as well as for building surfaces in densely populated areas. Super-hydrophobic and metal passivation coatings
are being applied to consumer products with water proof and anti-corrosive capabilities. Furthermore, an important direction is established to develop recycling technologies for the common municipal solid wastes – plastic, electronic, wood and food.
Industrial Waste Water Treatment and Ambient Air Purification
Novel bio and advanced materials as well as novel reaction and process technologies are being developed by NAMI for industrial waste water treatment and large scale ambient air purification.

Industrial wastewater treatment (from different industries like textile, paper, and chemical) is essential and critical to maintain fresh water supply for the ever increasing world population. Different bacteria or microalgae are used in optimized conditions to target specific byproducts in wastewater. Novel reactor designs as well as overall treatment plant operation optimization further enhance the treatment capability.

NAMI has developed multi-generation air purification technologies, starting from PhotoCatalytic Oxidation (PCO) based air purification technique to an innovative integrated Plasma-PCO technology called Plasma Driven Catalysis (PDC). This NAMI patented air purification technology is capable of treating heavily polluted environment such as casinos, factories and smoking rooms. Another innovative application based on advanced bio materials and novel reactor design is the use of microalgae in a photobioreactor for ambient air purification. Reducing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is one of the key goals of many governments and environmental groups. NAMI has developed a microalgae air treatment unit for carbon dioxide consumption, oxygen generation and biomass production and has installed a demonstration unit at the Hong Kong – Macau – Zhuhai Bridge's Information Centre in Tung Chung.
Functional Coatings and Surface Treatments
NAMI has developed an environmentally friendly reflective coating to replace the traditional electroplating process which generates serious heavy metal contamination. The NAMI developed coating uses all green and low cost materials with simple dipping or spraying methods. Our industrial partner is already in the commercialization phase with an operating production line in place, targeting both industrial and consumer markets.
Recycling Technologies
Handling of municipal wastes in a highly dense city with limited space like Hong Kong is extremely difficult. With the city’s landfill sites filling up quickly, there is a strong market drive to develop and implement efficient and profitable waste recycling schemes. NAMI is focusing on this opportunity to develop novel and cost effective recycling technologies for common municipal wastes. These include processing of common plastic wastes and turning it into higher value goods, utilizing bio agents in an environmentally friendly process to extract precious metals from electronic wastes, turning food wastes into biofuel, and binding plastic and wood wastes into composite plastic lumber for outdoor furniture.

One example of our recycling technology development which not only focuses on the use of novel material and technology but also on the economics and logistics of the entire recycling scheme is our project on Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) recycling. Hong Kong generates over 100 tons of EPS wastes every day but less than 5% is being recycled. This is mainly because of the light weight of EPS which makes its transportation to the recycling sites non economical. NAMI not only optimized an efficient supercritical CO2 extraction process to achieve high purity recycled polystyrene but also developed a logistic scheme with our industrial partner to dissolve the EPS into solution at the collection sites for easy high volume transportation. This entire technical and logistic scheme allows our industrial partner to develop a profitable EPS recycling business.
